Brocco Bank, Sheffield 11
St Augustine's parish was carved out of that of St. Mark's Church, Broomhill to minister to those living in the new suburbs along Ecclesall Road and around Endcliffe Park. Archdeacon William Fisher Favell of St Mark's Church led the campaign to purchase this former quarry site and to raise the £10,000 needed to build the church. It was opened in December 1898. The architect was J.D. Webster and although said to be typical of his Early English Style it is unusual in having a 35m high tower. Its high and severe interior is relieved by a set of stained glass windows by Charles Eamer Kempe of London (1837-1907). Brocco Bank links the suburb of Hunter's Bar - a former toll gate - situated behind the photographer) and Clarkehouse Road, location of the main entrance into the Botanical Gardens. The name Brocco Bank may (?) be linked of the existence of former badger setts (Early Celtic; 'brocco' and the derivative 'brock').
