Pillar Opening in Christ Church, Fulwood, Sheffield
An unusual architectural feature of this church building is the openings in the columns that support the walls and roof. The openings appear as if they have been hewn out of the stone, leaving just four slender pieces supporting the weight above. This gravity defying illusion was achieved by replacing part of each column with a structural steel frame comprising square hollow sections with surface coating. In this photograph, a flower arrangement has been placed in the resulting space inside the column. The intricate forms of the flowers contrast to good effect with the straight lines of the structure and windows behind.

The South Aisle of Fulwood Parish Church, Sheffield
This church building has an unusual and clever architectural feature in that the brick columns supporting the arches have been partly replaced with a slender framework of structural steel, coated to look like stone, creating a light and airy church interior.
