Crookes, Crookes
Unusually, two of the shops below have conservatory type additions to the frontages. They are Da Vinci Hair, Hairdressers, which back in the ‘60s was Darnell’s Drapers Shop – DJ’s News, which as the name suggest is a Newsagents as it was back then. Lastly is Mr B’s, Off Licence which was a Butchers Shop.

Nairn Street, Sheffield
Behind this wall there is a small pathway leading from Nairn Street to the road simply known as Crookes. A self-set plant is growing between the coping stones. A Hebe, in fact.

Nairn Street, Crookes
Looking beyond Elgin Street, to the right, are the terraced houses lining the main road, Crookes. No.97, the house directly in front, is the only one with an off-shot.
To the left is the entrance to the Church of St Thomas. If you turn right through the entrance, a path leads to the main road.

On the right, just above Coombe Road is Mr B’s Off Licence and back in the ‘60s it was a Butchers Shop. Beyond the house is DJ’s News, which as the name suggests, is a Newsagents, as it was back then. Next door is Da Vinci Hair, Hairdressers, which used to be Darnell’s Drapers Shop. There are a couple more houses and between them and The Works Beauty Studio, is Wesley Lane.
On this side of the road, just beyond Bute Street, was Ideal Upholstery Services - Charles Scruton, Hairdresser - Dow Electrics, Electrical Appliance Dealers and H Vicars, Fishmonger. All gone by the '70s.
Charles Scruton, the hairdresser was a pleasant mild–mannered man. The problem with him was that he was good at his job and so the shop was nearly always full, which often meant a long wait.

Crookes, Crookes
To the right, is new build. When I lived in Crookes, there in the ‘60s, was a mixed range of old cottages, from 2–20 Crookes. At 22/24 was The Old Original Grindstone – 26/30 Raffo’s Gift Shop & Hardware Dealers – 34/36 Cecil P Oldham, Electrical Engineer and Bicycle Dealer. "Ernie", as we knew him, also ran a cycling club based in Totley. From 40–60, more houses in the row, which included Sam Hoole & Sons, Coal Dealers. At number 62 was Mrs A Redford, Fruitier and Greengrocer. All were gone by the ‘70s. Then comes Coombe Road, across which is Mr B’s Off Licence. Back in the ‘60s it was a Butchers Shop. Beyond the house is DJ’s News, which as the name suggests, is a Newsagents, as it was back then. Next door is Da Vinci Hair, Hairdressers, which used to be Darnell’s Drapers Shop. Originally, this was a tram route - Crookes to Handsworth.

The Church of St Thomas, Crookes
The church is undergoing alterations, at the east end, in the form of an extension. It is hoped to be ready for Christmas.
