Rusting Rail
This rusting rail was part of the infrastructure of Grays Chalk Pit. The pit ceased operations in the 1920’s. Evidence of the old industrial railway is visible in a number of places. The pit is an SSSI, which until 2005 was only accessible by obtaining a special permit. Part of the planning gain from construction of the Chafford Hundred housing development was the creation of Chafford Gorges Nature Reserve http://www.essexwt.org.uk/visitor_centres__nature_reserves/chafford_gorges/ , the developers resources where used to make the site safe for casual visitors.
