Premises on Station Road West, Oxted
Nothing is really old here in what was first called New Oxted, the whole settlement here was created when the railway came (quite late - 1884) and was just built to look old.

Roundabout on Church Lane, Oxted
Church Lane leads left towards Limpsfield, or right towards Hurst Green.
Station Road West leads left (as a high street) towards Oxted Railway Station.
Behind the roundabout is one of the many black and white half-timbered shops on the street.

North side of Station Road, Oxted
Both sides of Station Road are in the attractive Tudor style so characteristic of twentieth century domestic and commercial buildings in Surrey. What is more unusual is that even the cinema is in this style.

South side of Station Road, Oxted
The half-timbered style of the buildings does much to enchance the appearance of Oxted's town centre.

"At the going down of the sun" ..... Oxted War Memorial
Photograph taken just a few minutes before sunset, with the location for the War Memorial seemingly carefully chosen. The extract of the poem, "For the Fallen", by Lancaster-born poet Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), is read at Remembrance Day services throughout the United Kingdom:
"They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
