This 15th-century hall-house originally accommodated visitors to the college nearby. These days it is in the hands of the local authority, and houses a public library. The view is north-east, from the property's garden.

The Guest House, Lingfield
A 15th-century hall-house, built to accommodate visitors to the college (a monastic foundation) which once stood nearby. It now houses a public library. Ian Nairn, writing in the Surrey volume of 'The Buildings of England', complained that the house was 'over-restored'. The brickwork of the ground-floor and chimneys probably dates from the Victorian restoration, and sections of the timber framing are too regular to be medieval work. Nonetheless (for me, at least) the overall impression is very memorable - a rival to the timber-framed buildings of Essex: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3546183 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4659537 That lamp-standard, it has to be said, is unfortunate.
