Vann Lake in October
Looking very muddy after heavy rain in the previous few days. Behind the camera there's a dam, and water plunges 30 feet or more into a steep-sided gully. I hadn't been here before, and my guess was that the lake had originated as a mill-pond in the days of the Wealden iron industry. According to the Surrey Wildlife Trust, the origin of the lake is unknown, but may have had to do with plans for a linen mill: http://www.surreywildlifetrust.org/reserves/show?id=69
