The churns - on their platform - are a reminder of farming life as it was for much of the 20th century.

Milk churns at the entrance to Green Lane Farm
A nice touch - but it left me wondering how long it is since churns at a farm entrance were a daily sight in the countryside. From my own experience I can say that traditional haystacks had largely disappeared by the mid-1980's - I suspect the daily collection of churns ended rather earlier.

Junction of Cudworth Lane and Green Lane
Cudworth Lane forks left with Green Lane to the right. To the left there are two gate posts, hidden by the undergrowth, which would have held the gate to the Cudworth Estate.

No cars - only horses and bicycles
Although this metalled way looks inviting, this is Green Lane and is a private road, so if you wish to progress down here, you must either walk or ride a horse or a bicycle. Good advice as it soon becomes impassable for cars anyway.

It is surprising to see a postbox and telephone box here, but they seem to be private adornments of the farm.

Cudworth manor house, Surrey
Cudworth is a small settlement hidden away in the depths of the Surrey countryside. The moated manor house dates from about 1500 but has been much altered and extended over the years.
