Dorking Halls, Reigate Road, Dorking
The distinctly art deco building was opened in 1931 to provide a home for the Leith Hill Music Festival, at the heart of which was the celebrated composer and conductor Ralph Vaughan Williams. It remained in the ownership of the LHMF until the second world war when it was requisitioned by the government and occupied by the Meat Marketing Board and the Army. At the end of hostilities it was handed back to the LHMF in a very poor state. Unable or unwilling to spend money on restoring the building the owners sold it to the local council for £15,000. In the mid 1990s the building was fully refurbished and it is now a fully equipped entertainment and conference complex.
