Dorking: The 'Star'
Large Greene-King pub at the western end of West Street, scene of some of the worst traffic congestion recently.

'The Star', Station Road, Dorking (2)
This is the south-facing side of the pub, seen across West Street. The striking thing about this building is the slate hanging - especially as some slates have a somewhat rusty appearance. For another view, see: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2760634 In the distance is the ridge of the North Downs, not far from the Denbies vineyard.

'The Star', Station Road, Dorking (3)
A remarkable building, with the upper storeys entirely slate-hung. What is more, the slates are not a uniform grey - many are warmer, rusty, colours. The pub is prominently sited at the junction of West Street (on the right) and Station Road, but sits on a rather oddly shaped plot. St Martin's Church is visible at the far end of Church Street, on the left. Slate is by no means a local material in south-east England, so that slate-hung buildings are few and far between. The only other slate-hung pub known to me in the SE is Image, at Hunston, near Chichester. For the first image in this sequence, see: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2760369

The Star (2) - sign, 36 West Street, Dorking
The pub has more than one sign. This one is in West Street and indicates that it is a Greene King house. The brewers Greene King are based at Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, where they have a brewery. Their pubs division has around 1,600 pubs at present, and has extended well beyond their East Anglian base, particularly as they have taken over many pubs from other now defunct breweries. In days when few people could read and write, signs with easily recognised objects such as the Star were popular. Image
