West Street Pub Sign
Sign outside the "Old House at Home" on Dorking's West Street. Perhaps the legs belong to a Roman and a WW1 soldier? The Young's brewery has recently closed and the named beer is now brewed in Bedford.

The Old House at Home (1), 24 West Street, Dorking
This is a Young's house, and according to their website: "The Old House at Home is a lovely Grade II listed timber framed building thought to date from as early as the 14th century. Originally two houses, it is thought to have become a pub some time between 1820 and 1855". Next door at no. 23 is Corbetts Real Ales, an off-licence specialising in real ales and cider. Image Image

The Old House at Home (2) - sign, 24 West Street, Dorking
An unusual name for a pub but according to Young's website:- "The name the Old House at Home comes from an early Victorian song popular with soldiers far from home". The building is very old but is thought to have become a pub sometime between 1820 and 1855. Image Image

'The Star', Station Road, Dorking
This eye-catching pub stands on an oddly shaped plot at the corner of West Street and Station Road. Tile-hanging is frequently seen on buildings in Surrey and neighbouring counties - but the cladding on The Star is of slate. Since getting involved in Geograph I have noticed a few other slate-hung buildings in the South-East, but these include only one other pub Image at Hunston, near Chichester. Slate-hanging is far more typical of places like Cornwall, Wales, and Cumbria, where slate is a local material. Its use here is puzzling - though I suppose the job of hanging slates presents no problems to anyone skilled in hanging tiles.
