This locally listed building on Reigate Heath was originally built in 1899 to a design of F Knight. It is now a care home. Seen here in snow after a substantial fall over the previous three days. A native of Africa and South Asia, the Rose-ringed Parakeet (also known as the Ring-necked Parakeet) has become increasingly established in the wild in the UK, the current population dating from the late 1960s, with rapid expansion caused by successful breeding, probably added to by subsequent escapes. It is thought that the current population consists of up to 30,000 birds, the large proportion being based in South London/Surrey. This male (as told from the ring) in a Scots Pine on Reigate Heath, lit up in evening summer sunshine, is part of a population that roosts in Redhill and regularly disperses west through Reigate and Betchworth. Whilst in small numbers they are an attractive (if exotic) addition to birdlife in suburban gardens, they have the potential to become a pest, with commercial fruit growers particularly at risk.

Heathland restoration work over the last 20 or so years in Reigate Heath has led to increased heather flowering, justifying the area's status as an SSSI and LNR, with 2011 giving an exceptional display. Most of the heather in this view is Ling (Calluna vulgaris). In the background is Reigate Heath Golf Club clubhouse, with the sweeps of Reigate Heath Windmill behind it.

Weather vane on roof of Heathfield Lodge (see Image). I had originally assumed that the vane was intended to represent nearby Reigate Heath Windmill (see Image), but I was subsequently contacted by a former resident of the lodge to say that she had had it made in 1992 by a Sussex blacksmith to commemorate her husband's 50th birthday and the fact that it could represent the windmill on Reigate Heath was purely accidental.
