River Stor: Chantry Lane Waterfall
At this stage in its development the watercourse can hardly be called a river as one can jump over it with ease! However it does become significantly larger as it flows down through Storrington. A natural waterfall is unusual in Sussex, but as Peter explains in his Image] taken in May 2008 there is a geological reason for it. In addition to this image please also see Image] from July 2011. Both of these photographs were taken from more or less the same viewpoint as this one. Chantry Lane is to the right.

Waterfall, Chantry Lane
The river Stor which emerges from the Downs near Chantry Lane, tumbles over the edge of the clay stratum to the next one of greensand. In the 18th century the river powered a fulling mill where woollen cloth made from the fleeces of the sheep on the Downs was treated.
