Possible Site of Plaw Gate, Forest Row
There were originally two gates into Ashdown Forest from what is now Forest Row whose development has obliterated any evidence of their location. The first High Gate is remembered in both the name of a road and a small suburb of the village. This gate contained a highway that headed southwards towards Wych Cross which was later replaced by a turnpike in the mid 18th century which forms the basis of the modern A22. The other, Plaws Gate, was close by and on a map produced by John Kelton in 1747 provided access for a horse road to Rotherfield. Little remains of this route today except a stretch of bridleway that crosses Crowborough Warren, though the course of the footpath heading southwards looks like it follows some of the projected route. This view takes in the drive to the car park for Forest Row Sports ground from Shalesbrook Lane beyond which is a triangular area of land that leads into Chapel Lane.
