A block of flats virtually opposite the station entrance that were built on the site of a former filling station.

Built sometime between the wars and located to the north of Balcombe station though I'm not certain if it was ever owned by the railways. Viewed from the footpath that links Newlands to London Road.

The former Railway Inn was built opposite the station in the 1840s and closed around 1963 after which it was converted into a private dwelling.

The original Balcombe station was opened on 12th July 1841 by the London & Brighton Railway, which became the London Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1846. The station was resited to its present position in 1848 or 1849. This view is from the down platform looking in the direction of London. Although only one train an hour in each direction stops here most of the time, some 110 trains per day pass through in total and so the station sees a lot of activity. The strange thing about the station is that although all the off peak stopping trains are First Capital Connect, the station is actually managed by Southern and it is a credit to them. There are attractive flower beds and even a rockery garden on the down platform. In 2015 the Balcombe station garden won an award in the ‘Gardening Against The Odds’ competition as a ‘Garden That Makes You Smile’. The award was presented at Syon House.

On the Brighton Line and served by Thameslink, this station is close to the Balcombe Tunnel which is a few kms north. The impressive Balcombe viaduct is to the south before reaching Haywards Heath.
