56, High Street, Lindfield
One of the few buildings built at right angles to the street and dating back to the 16th century. Also known as The Tollhouse on the account of it being home to the toll keeper when the current B2028 was a turnpike between the 1770s and 1884, one of a number of routes between London and Brighton. The tollgates crossed the road in front of the building and were dismantled and burnt by the villagers when the road was disturnpiked. See http://photohistory-sussex.co.uk/Durrantgate.jpg for an image of the old gate taken in 1865. Currently a shop and small tea room.

52-54, High Street, Lindfield
Number 52 is on the right and is also known as Ryecroft and dates from the 17th century and was originally timber framed. It was purchased as a manse by
Image in 1888 though it had ceased by using as such by 1903 though remained in the church's possession until it was sold in 1953. Number 54 is to the left and is known as Broomfields and I think dates from the 19th century.

65, High Street, Lindfield
There is a dispute between this building (Which also includes
Image) and
Image as to which is the oldest secular building on the High Street. There is partial evidence to suggest the house was built around 1330 and thus predates the grant of the town's market charter of 1344. What is not in dispute is the longevity of the business within. Humphrey's bakery was established in 1795 and still trading as such today operating as an independent and very popular with the locals judging by the queues often seen around lunchtimes.

Number 63 is the olive coloured building on the left that also originally included

Image may be older.

Red Lion, High Street, Lindfield
One of four pubs on the High Street. The original Red Lion was located next door, see
Image, until 1720 when it moved to this location. The inn rose in prominence when the main street was made part of a London-Brighton turnpike and was an official stop on the route until the coaching trade ceased in the aftermath of the construction of the railway. The garden contains an original 'horse gin' building that was moved here from its former location at Lindfield Brewery that was located in Denmans Lane.
