Kings Mill House
Grade II listed house dating originally from the 16th century. For listing particulars see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1029870.
Charles II is reputed to have stayed here, using the house as a hunting box, but that is not the origin of the name: this part of Nutfield was originally known as Kyne's Cross from a Michael Kyne who lived around here in the 14th century, and the name mutated to Kings Cross, with the lane in which the house stands being called Kings Cross Lane. By the end of the 16th century (i.e. long before Charles II came here), the house is recorded as being known as Kings, with the word Mill added later.
