Exchange House
Now part offices and part an Indian restaurant, this was originally the Jolliffe Arms pub, with records back to at least 1861. The Jolliffe family were owners of the Quarry Dean quarries, Merstham, source of Merstham Stone used in a number of significant buildings such as Windsor Castle, Westminster Abbey and London Bridge, being the nearest source of building stone to London.
By 1990 it had become an "American" restaurant called Detroits, but this was short lived, being redeveloped into offices. However, part of it reverted to its former use when the right hand side reopened in 1992 as the Shepherd's Pen (the name presumably being a reference to Shepherd's Hill, whose junction with London Road North is next to the building). However, even this failed to last, having closed by the late 1990s.
