Cottage at Shipley: rat-trap bond
Parts of this cottage (including the end wall) appear to have been built by laying bricks on their edges - so-called 'rat-trap bond'. Rat-trap bond is usually thought of as a means of skimping on materials, but I noticed that parts of the building less visible from the street are constructed more conventionally. So I'm left wondering whether rat-trap bond was chosen - in this instance - for its jaunty appearance. Rat-trap bond is not uncommon in Sussex http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2270461 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4616861 though I have yet to see it elsewhere.

Rat-trap bond at Shipley
Much of this cottage (including this end-wall) seems to have been built using a method of brick-laying known as rat-trap bond - with bricks laid on their edges. For a wider view of the building see: Image
