Clothalls farmhouse
Walkers are obliged to pass through a high-tech gate in front of this house. You have to push a green button on a post to make it open. I struggled for ages before discovering the green button, all the while imagining that a thousand eyes were observing and judging me from the windows! The rear of the house would also have made a good photographic subject but there was a man sitting in the garden in a deckchair, so it seemed a bit intrusive to point the camera in that direction.

Clothall's Farmhouse
Clothalls is on a moated site with the southern (right) representing the earliest portion. A three-bay hall and northern cross-wing being added in the C15.
Clothall is a small parish in Hertfordshire and a family from there seems to have made its way to Sussex. Adam de Clothale married into the 'de Grensted' family about 1270. The last, Richard de Clothale, died in 1454.

Clothalls Farm
Former manor house largely dating from the 17th century but incorporating parts as early as the 14th century. The former moat lies beyond the farm house obscured by bushes.

A remnant of the former barns which were 'n' shaped with the others long demolished just leaving the eastern side which appears to have been converted into a garage. Image is just visible behind.
