Cowslip Cottage and Peacock Cottage, Milking Pen Lane, Old Basing, Hampshire
The nearer cottage is Cowslip Cottage, the further is Peacock Cottage - so named from the very elaborate topiary which has been on place for many years. These cottages are at the north end of Milking Pen Lane, just before the junction with The Street.

Cavalier Cottage, Old Basing
As the listed building description http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-138892-cavalier-cottage-2-old-basing-and-lychpi notes, the C17 eastern part of this "irregular group of attached small structures" has "the appearance of a former granary or cart-shed". Note the disused Edward VII postbox.

Junction of Milking Pen Lane with The Street, Old Basing, Hampshire
We are standing in Milking Pen Lane, which curves round to form a junction with The Street - the main north-south road through Old Basing. The 'Bolton Arms' pub (see Image) with its sign is straight ahead.

Another view of the junction shown in Image, dominated in this view by the thatched C16 and C17 Roundhead Cottage http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-138895-roundhead-cottage-5-old-basing-and-lychp . On the left are a pair of much later cottages, also listed http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-138894-1-and-3-old-basing-and-lychpit . On the right can be seen Peacock Cottage with its topiary (see Image).

The 'Bolton Arms', Old Basing, Hampshire.
The Old Basing area was a hotbed of conflict during the Civil War period, and many buildings now have names such as 'Cavalier Cottage' or 'Cromwell Cottage' associated with those times. But the Bolton Arms was there even before the civil war, and, had Oliver Cromwell been a drinking man, which by all accounts he wasn't, he might well have stepped into this pub for a pint. Certainly the beer is excellent in 2007.

Old Basing: The Bolton Arms
This timber framed public house is a Grade II Listed Building dating from the 16th century. Since Neil took Image in 2007 the large coat of arms and the large nameplate on this facade have evidently been removed. The view of this fine old building is somewhat marred by the proliferation of modern day overhead cabling, not to mention the Audi TT.
