Brunswick Hill
Some larger properties on Brunswick Hill showing some of Reading's decorative brickwork. The houses shown, numbers 3,5,7 and 9, were all built in 1894. Number 1 Brunswick Hill, for which you can see the gates, was built earlier in about 1876. The recent development of flats at the far end was done in 2008/2009. My thanks to the owner of one of these houses for all the information.

Restoration on Brunswick Hill
I hope they manage to keep the character of this place, with its decorative brickwork, although I have my doubts as they have indiscriminately knocked down some of the old wall to get skip access.

Reading West station
The morning after a night of steady snowfall, that had covered much of south-east England. The snow had been forecast, but Reading West station does not warrant gritting. All of my regular fellow commuters were there though.

Reading West
This station used to see the occasional summer service. The driver of 47355 looks back to the guard for the right away. It being summer, with all the additional services, it's all hands to the pumps or in this case freight locos to passenger duties. Reading depot is visible in the background.

Rat trap bond
This wall has recently been rebuilt, copying the original bond I am pleased to say. The bricks are laid on their sides in two parallel lines with a gap in between, and every fourth one is laid across the wall to provide a bond between the two halves. However there is a cavity in the middle where rats get trapped, hence the name. The bond is a way of building a reasonably strong wall with fewer bricks.

There are a number of individual properties similar to this in the area, of indeterminate age but characterised by ornate awnings above the ground floor.
