Museum of English Rural Life - steam lawnmower
A rare survivor, this Leyland steam lawnmower was built in 1893 by James Sumner. It has a vertical boiler carrying the inverted vertical duplex engine that drives the cutting cylinder and propels the mower. It was apparently well balanced and easy to turn. This mower was used on Lord Harrington's Elvaston Castle estate from c1894 to 1929. In 1896 James Sumner and Henry Spurrier formed the Lancashire Steam Motor Company.
