'Nelson' electric unit at Reading ? 1971
Officially designated as 4-COR (i.e. with CORridor throughout), the nickname was derived from the fact that they only had a single window at the leading end, giving them a one-eyed appearance. The name also reflected the fact that they were built for services on the line between London and Portsmouth where they continued to see most of their service before being withdrawn from service in 1972. They only appeared on the Reading service from 1970 following the appearance of more modern stock on the Portsmouth service. This view also shows the modified layout at Reading Station following the closure and demolition of the former Southern Railway station which had occupied the space behind the train used as a car park at this stage. The electric service to London was at this stage provided with just a single track and platform. The 21st century rebuilding of the station has again increased the number of tracks equipped with third rail electrification.
