End of an era at Chapel Street station
These "modernisation plan" diesel multiple units built in 1957 would have been the 'latest thing' when my Grandfather was Station Master at Southport. They were 30 years old but still running - though soon to be replaced by a newer generation of diesel 'Sprinters' - in 1988. This 2-car unit had just finished its journey from Manchester Victoria. Compare the scene with Image taken much more recently.
