Chorley War Memorial
As part of the peace celebrations to commemorate the ending of the First World War, a simple memorial consisting of a Celtic cross on top of a stone column and base was erected in its current position in early 1919 and dedicated to the fallen of the Borough. Despite Chorley having suffered hundreds of casualties during the 20th century, no names were placed around the War Memorial. This was rectified in 2012 when the “Chorley Remembers” project http://www.chorleyremembers.org.uk/chorleywarmemorial/ obtained funding for 738 names to be inscribed onto 13 new limestone panels which were installed at the back of the existing memorial. The redeveloped memorial site and new wall was finished on Friday, 9th November 2012.
