Freckleton Air Disaster Memorial and Remembrance Garden
This memorial is dedicated to the memory of the teachers, pupils and civilians who were killed in the Freckleton Air Disaster. On 23rd August 1944, a USAF B-24 Liberator heavy bomber crashed into the Holy Trinity Church of England School, demolishing three houses and the Sad Sack Snack Bar. The memorial carries the names of 2 teachers, 38 infants and 7 civilians who were killed Image The full toll, including British and American airforce personnel caught up in the destruction, was that a total of 61 people perished in this incident which ranks as probably the worst air accident in Britain during the Second World War.
