The Parish Church of St James, Leyland
The Parish of St James began in the Parish School in 1770. The Church, which was designed by Ewan Christian in early English style, was built in 1855. It is said that its west tower, with splay-footed spire, is visible from all of the surrounding area. It is a Grade II listed building (List entry Number: 1210642 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1210642 Historic England).

War Memorial at St James' Church
The War Memorial in St James’ churchyard is in front of the church between the gate and church door. The granite memorial is in the form of an ornate, Celtic style wheel Cross, which rests on a square section shaft. This shaft carries the main inscription: To the glory of God and in grateful memory of those from this parish who laid down their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-1919 He laid down his life for us The names of the fallen are recorded on the plinth and can be seen at https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/249439/ War Memorials online See also Image] and Image]
