Up parcels train at Leyland
LMS Rebuilt 'Patriot' Class 6P 4-6-0 No. 45512 'Bunsen' (built 9/32, rebuilt 7/48, withdrawn 3/65) dashes southwards through Leyland station (between Preston and Wigan) with a heavy parcels train - in between all the holiday expresses on a Summer Saturday. Compare Image and Image for more details.

Leyland Station, with train
View northward, towards Preston etc.; West Coast Main Line, ex-Lancashire Union (London & North Western/Lancashire & Yorkshire Joint) Euxton Junction - Preston section. Trains on the Manchester - Blackpool axis that joined at Euxton Junction added to the WCML trains made this an extremely busy four-track section. This view, taken on the same afternoon at precisely the same spot as Image, shows the 16.00 Blackpool Central - Wigan (North Western) - Tyldesley - Manchester Exchange stopping train, of only four coaches but double-headed by two Stanier Class 5 4-6-0's Nos. 45318 and 45195 (built respectively 1937 and 1935, 45195 being withdrawn 7/66, but 45318 was one of the very last survivors, lasting until 8/68).

Coppers
The police station, dating from 1882, was closed in 1998. It has since re-opened, housing the "Coppers Tea Rooms".

Like the good old days!
Twin L.M.S. 5MT Class ("Black 5s") accelerating through Leyland Station on the up fast line after a signals check. An interesting comparison can be made with this picture Image] taken by Ben Brooksbank in 1963 from virtually the same position.
