Blackpool Illuminations Special entering Preston
View southward: WCML and associated lines. The train is probably the 08.00 Sheffield Midland - Blackpool North, which ran via the Hope Valley line, New Mills and the Midland Junction connection into Manchester Victoria then the main L&Y line via Bolton. It is headed by Stanier 5MT 4-6-0 No. 44863 (built 1945, withdrawn 5/67) and is passing on the Down Through line. It is one of a constant procession of similar trains going to Blackpool on Summer Saturdays and for the Illuminations.

Preston Station
Class 40's 40082 and 40178 stand in the station with, respectively, a train of bitumen tanks and a train of ICI chemical tanks. The class 40's were initially built for express passenger use but were demoted as lighter and more powerful types became available. They provided many years of sterling service on heavy freight trains and were particularly synonymous with the northwest of England.
Above the trains is a bridge that connected the station platforms with the Rail Express Parcels depot - since removed. In the background County Hall is just visible.
