Museum of Lancashire, Stanley Street, Preston
Built as the Court House by Thomas Rickman in 1825. A severe ashlar block - it was probably less so before it lost its dome - with an unconventional entrance round the corner. Grade II listed. Adam Christopher tells me that Lancashire County Council has just (late 2016) closed the museum (except for pre-booked school visits), pending a possible transfer to a new operator. Four other museums are in the same boat as councils contend with rapidly dwindling budgets.
