Overlooking the Market Place
It is not for me, a non-resident, to call any part of Preston an excrescence. But why this bleak and unexciting building was permitted in what is possibly the best bit of urban landscape is beyond me. It was highly placed in a public poll of buildings to demolish in the town.
I do notice that no other geographist has recorded this building, which is known as Crystal House. It was converted from offices to accommodation. That, I suppose, is a good thing in a town centre. See https://www.base1architects.com/projects/apartments-at-crystal-house . Unfortuantely the cladding fell short of standards and is being replaced - https://www.lep.co.uk/heritage-and-retro/heritage/prestons-ugliest-tower-block-set-for-a-facelift-but-will-it-look-any-prettier-3201074. It is documented when new at https://www.flickr.com/photos/rpsmithbarney/12892623523 .

Miller Arcade, Preston
The entrance to the Miller Arcade, an 1899 grade II listed shopping arcade on Birley Street in the centre of Preston, is seen here. It is described by Historic England as having an eclectic style with Moorish elements. The name is taken from Nathaniel Miller, a local dentist, who commissioned the building. Today it houses a small range of generally upmarket shops.
