Station Road, Ningwood
The road crossed the Newport to Freshwater railway line just the other side of the masonry village sign. Prior to the railway opening in 1889, the road was diverted a little from the straight, to bridge the railway somewhat to the left, now among the trees, but after closure in 1953 the road was diverted back again to its original course. There was a station to the left of the bridge, which survives as private house.

Gone Forever
The course of the Freshwater, Yarmouth & Newport Railway heading east from the old Ningwood station. Taken from the site of the road bridge; this was removed after the closure of the line when the roads were realigned. The FYNR opened in 1888 and closed in 1953. It was always an impecunious affair, even by Island standards! When the Southern Railway was formed in 1923 to amalgamate all the railways in the south of England, it refused to take on this liability until forced to do so, but having done so it did its best to improve the line and boost its fortunes, but to no avail.

The old railway station, Ningwood
For railway aficionados the origin of the site is given away by the substantial concrete gatepost on the left and the lamp post on the right. The original station was quite small and substantial wings have been added since closure.
