Ryde St Johns Road Station
The original terminus building for the Shanklin to Ryde line opened in 1864. Whilst the extension to Ryde Pierhead opened in 1880 this station retained its importance as a depot and main goods yard for the town. Today it is the headquarters of the Island Line, the depot sheds are to the right and the administrative offices are all based at this station as well as the signal box that controls the line. View taken from the footbridge looking down to Platform 2 with the main station buildings to the left on platform 3.

Nearest the camera is 4Vec unit 485 044, originally a 1923 stock London Underground train and now nearing the end of its operational life on the Island Line. Beyond it is the first of its spanking new replacements 483 001, a 1938 stock L. U. train. They are both in Network South East livery.

483 001 at St John's Road, 1989
Looking shiny and new, but in reality 50 years old, the first of the new generation of Isle of Wight stock is ready for duty. Nearly 20 years later the class is still running the line, although this particular unit was scrapped in 2006.
