Departure from Cowes
The railway no longer runs from Cowes, the line from here to Newport and Ryde having been closed in 1967. Part of the Newport - Ryde line is now operated by the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
I haven't visited the area for many years but according to my Explorer map, the road bridge on the left still survives.

The Wheatsheaf, Terminus Road, Cowes
The painted sign has been preserved on the old pub building even though it appears not to have been used as such for many years.

Medina Estuary at Cowes, 2004
View southwards from a ferry from Cowes to East Cowes. This was the best I could do to get a photograph of the site of Mill Hill (IoW) station, which had been over to the right on the ex-IoW Central Newport - Cowes branch until the line was closed from 21/2/66.

Apartment block on the site of Cowes railway station
I came to this location with the aim of photographing the same view as
Image, although development of the area over the last 45 years and particularly in the last few years made that impossible. The area is now occupied by private apartments and access to the exact location of the earlier picture was not possible. This is as close as I could get. The rear of the older houses on the right can be seen on both photos and provide locational evidence. Cowes station signal box was immediately below the tallest of the group of older houses.

Train from Ryde Pier Head at Cowes
View westward from near the barrier, towards Newport etc.: terminus of ex-Isle of Wight Railway branch from Newport, closed 21/2/66 (goods 16/5/66). The train is headed by ex-LSW Adams O2 class 0-4-4T No. W24 'Calbourne'. This stalwart was built in 12/1891 as No. 209, and shipped to the IoW in 4/25. It was not withdrawn until 3/67 and purchased the same year by the heritage Isle of Wight Steam Railway - and is still going strong - now 125 years old!
