The Painters Arms, Cowes
According to the sign, the painter is in a rowing boat painting the more ornate parts of an old ship.

Painters Arms (1), 51 Cross Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight
A popular traditional public house in the town centre. The building dates from about 1903. The original public house of the same name was demolished and the site is now a car park. The exterior colour scheme and signage has changed since this photograph was taken.

This sign has been replaced. The current sign is quite different and includes a coat of arms on a blue background.

Painters Arms (3) - Ushers Brewery plaque, 51 Cross Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight
It would seem that this public house was at one time an Ushers house. This plaque remained on the Cross Street frontage when this photograph was taken. The Trowbridge, Wiltshire, brewery closed in 2000. It was established in 1824 but in 1960 became part of Watney Mann. Its subsequent history is too complicated to go into here but despite brewing at full capacity it was closed and amazingly the brewing equipment found its way to North Korea! You can still, with difficulty, sometimes find Ushers branded beers, but they are brewed by someone else.

Painters Arms (4) - door to Bottle & Jug Dept., 51 Cross Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight
This is a reminder of days gone by - in effect an off-licence service where you could go into a public house with an empty bottle or jug and get it filled with beer. Back in the late 1970's friends of mine lived in a small village bordering on Coventry. They would go into the local pub and get a jug filled with beer. It was much appreciated on my visits! Whether anyone still does this I don't know. I can see no handle on this Painters Arms door so I suspect it is no longer used. An interesting historical artefact nevertheless.
