Shambler's Wharf, Arctic road, Cowes - grasshopper beam engine
This was still in use on compressed air but only when needed to haul vessels up the slipway. Missed this by a day! Grasshopper engine by J P Almond, North Shields. Probably mid 19th century and installed probably second-hand in 1885. Removed in 1996.

Shambler's Wharf, Arctic Road, Cowes - slipway winch
Day, Summers winch with something like a 700 ton pull driven through reduction gears by a grasshopper beam engine that is out of view in this image. Originally steam, latterly compressed air. The engine is with a museum/dealership in Kent. There is a duplex steam/compressed air pump seen in the background.

Shambler's Wharf, Arctic Road, Cowes - pump
This shipyard had a beam engine driving a large slipway winch. It also had this small horizontal duplex non-rotative pump of the type pioneered by Worthington in the USA. I believe that like the beam engine this could still be worked by compressed air for draining sumps. The steam cylinders are on the right and the pump cylinders on the left.

United Kingdom Sailing Academy
The UKSA advertises itself as the world's premier sailing academy. It is somewhat incongruous to find it tucked away down a residential street in Cowes, but the River Medina is just over the hedge.

End of the Newport to Cowes cycle route
The former Newport to Cowes railway line is now a cycle route. Here it ends abruptly although the railway used to continue for another half a mile into the centre of Cowes but this is as far as the cycle route goes before it takes to residential streets. The road was built after the closure of the railway, thus severing the former embankment. My thanks to a former resident for this information.
