Treverbyn: china clay dry, Wheal Martyn
Pan kiln at the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum and Country Park. Here the under-floor heating channels have been exposed. A chimney stack aided the movement of the hot gases along these flues. In the distance can be seen a truck on the traverser or travelling bridge, enabling clay slurry to be brought to all parts of the kiln from the settling tanks. When dry the clay was cut into blocks with a shovel for dispatch. Wheal Martyn museum is in Treverbyn parish, near St Austell

Treverbyn: old settling tank
At Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum and Country Park. Clay would flow from the settling tank into the pan kiln or dry in the slate-roofed building. The remaining clay slurry would be shovelled from the tank into narrow-gauge wagons and taken onto a travelling bridge or traverser in the kiln, for distribution onto the kiln floor, to be dried before dispatch. In Treverbyn parish

Treverbyn: tanks and dries, Wheal Martyn
At Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum. The dries or pan kilns are the linear slate roofed buildings on the left. In front of the dries are the settling tanks which used to accommodate china clay slurry after it had been processed through settling pits and mica drags. An overgrown, disused, sky tip stands on the skyline. In Treverbyn parish
