The St Austell Brewery is an independent regional brewery with 167 pubs across Cornwall and Devon and is an example of the sort of company which used to be common in the early part of the 20th century, most other companies of this type have disappeared through mergers and take-overs by larger brewing concerns.

St Austell brewery
This is the original Victorian brewery building, still in use and producing a range of popular real ales. The brewery was founded in 1851 and is still owned by descendants of its founder, Walter Hicks.

Ventilation Pipe, Poltair Road, St Austell
The purpose of this ventilation pipe is not known. There is another one further up the Tregonnisey road near the Cornwall College, but it has not been restored.One suspects these are for a tunnel.
