Fivelanes is now bypassed by the modern A30 Trunk Road but in the early nineteenth century it was a place of some importance. In 1816 Five Lanes – as it then was – was one of five district centres for Thomas Russell & Co’s flying waggons, plying between Falmouth, Exeter and London, sometimes carrying bullion from the mail vessels or packets shipped from places such as Lisbon, Malta and Jamaica [Source: Dorian Gerhold. In the 1930s, and probably later, this was the main road to Launceston. It's now been superseded twice over.
