A view to the west from Spean Bridge Station
Taking advantage of an increasingly rare feature on regular service trains on the British network - opening windows. This is a view from the rear door window of the Caledonian Sleeper en-route from Fort William to London. The sleeping cars are Mark III vehicles, introduced in the early 1980s and therefore not blighted by the later movement towards totally sealed carriages, which are OK until the air-conditioning fails!

The Caledonian Sleeper at Spean Bridge station
Nearing the end of its journey from London to Fort William. As can be seen, the train is double headed with a class 66 locomotive leading and a class 73 behind. The class 66 is a freight locomotive and is not equipped to supply power for the electric train heating and air conditioning (sometimes referred to as 'hotel power') so that is supplied by the class 73. Six of the class 73 locos were introduced after Serco took over the sleeper franchise a couple of years ago. They originated from the Southern Region of British Railways and have been extensively overhauled for their new róle. It was envisaged that they would be used on the routes from Edinburgh to Inverness, Fort William and Aberdeen, but there were strong doubts about their suitability and, indeed, some have suffered electrical faults, hence the use of the class 66 loco to provide the train's motive power. On my journey there were problems with the power supply with no heating for a good part of the journey from Edinburgh and a late breakfast!
