Pedestrian crossing
At the western end of the Caledonian Canal this crossing allows pedestrians to safely cross the A830 Fort William to Mallaig road at Banavie. There is a road swing bridge is to the right of the image. Note the upright red/white road barriers indicating that the bridge is in place and traffic may cross. There is also a railway swing bridge (behind the camera) which allows trains to cross the Caledonian Canal. Both of these bridges must be open to allow vessels to proceed up/down the canal. The series of eight locks known as 'Neptune's Staircase' can be seen beyond the pedestrian crossing. Built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822 these locks form the longest staircase lock system in the UK.
