Stonemason's marks, on the bottom of the Caledonian Canal
This section of the canal has been drained, to allow for repairs and replacement of several lock gates. The canal was built between 1803 and 1822. The stonemasons working on the canal would carve a symbol on the stones they lay, to show how much work they did, and ensure they were paid. A number of marks are visible at the bottom of the locks.
