Site of the Charterhouse, Perth
The monument stands on the corner of King Street and Hospital Street. Surmounted by a crown over the initials and numerals JR 1437, it bears a sculpted royal standard and the inscription: "Within these grounds stood the Carthusian monastery founded by King James I of Scotland in 1429. It was the only house belonging to this order in Scotland. In the precincts of the monastery were buried the royal founder, his queen Joan Beaufort and Margaret Tudor queen of King James IV." (1437 is the date of James I's assassination in the Blackfriars monastery of Perth.) For more on the Charterhouse, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perth_Charterhouse See also Image

Site of former Carthusian monastery, Perth
In 1426 King James I sought permission to build a Carthusian monastery (or Charterhouse), and construction began in 1429, supervised by John of Bute, a Cistercian monk. Unfortunately nothing remains today of Scotland's only Charterhouse, as the monastery was destroyed during the violent upheaval of the Reformation in 1559. However, this location does boast three royal burials - James I of Scotland, his queen, Joan Beaufort, and Margaret Tudor, wife of James IV of Scotland and sister of King Henry VIII of England.
