Highland Mainline
This photo shows the 'Highland Mainline' Railway Line in western Scotland. Trains run on this line between Edinburgh/Glasgow to Inverness. The line mainly follows the A9 road between Perth and Inverness. In a typical weekday service, 7 trains run to Edinburgh and 4 trains to Glasgow heading South. Going North, there is 5 trains a day direct from Glasgow and 5 from Edinburgh. Also there is the daily 'Highland Chieftain' train from Inverness to London via Edinburgh and the East Coast Mainline and also the Caledonian Sleeper to London running overnight, 6 days a week. Pictured here is a single track section of the line just north of Pitlochry which is closer to the southern end of the line. Also shown is an old style Semaphore Signal which is set to be replaced with more modern signalling.
