The Soldier's Leap at Killiecrankie
Donald McBean leapt over the deep gorge of the River Garry at the height of the Battle of Killiecrankie on 27th. July 1689 while trying to escape the Highlanders. (A leap of 5.5 m - 18.5 feet) McBean, a lowland Scot, was part of a Government force which was defeated by Highlanders who supported King James VII of Scots and II of Great Britain. The king had been ousted during the Glorious Revolution in England when William of Orange and Mary (James' daughter) ascended the throne of Great Britain though were never crowned as monarchs of Scotland.

Soldier's Leap, Killiecrankie, Perthshire taken 1965
Killiecrankie Pass was the site of a large battle between the Jacobites and the Orange Covenanters in 1689. In this particular battle, the Jacobites emerged victorious. One of the only escape routes was the leap across this gorge. One soldier is recorded to have made the 18 foot leap with Highlanders chasing him with claymores swinging. http://www.darkisle.com/k/killiecrankie/killiecrankie.html

Triffids Trifle With Killiecrankie
What must foreign tourists with poor English think as they travel through Killiecrankie? A right turn after the bridge runs south of the River Garry to Shierglas quarry. Continuing straight on and up through the village, the road passes Killiecrankie's visitor centre on the right and then on to Pitlochry.
