Remains of Cupar Abbey
Cistercian Cupar Abbey was founded by King Malcolm IV in the 12th. century before becoming one of the most important monasteries in Scotland. Note the spelling - Cupar. In the 17th. century the area was known as Coupin but there was still confusion with the Angus town and Cupar in Fife. Finally the town was renamed Couper Angus to distinguish it from its Fife namesake.
