Tibbermore Church and graveyard
Tibbermore Church is located close to the site of the first battle of the Scottish Civil War, which took place on 1st September 1644, and saw a Royalist army under James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose comprehensively rout a numerically superior Covenanter army. Three hundred slain Covenanters are reputed to be buried in the churchyard. The minister at the time of the battle, Alexander Balneaves, was defrocked for giving Montrose drink of water on the day before the battle. His defence to his fellow ministers ran as follows:"There was not one of them who would not have kissed Montrose's backside on the day of the battle".
