The old school at Braceborough, near Bourne, Lincolnshire
St Margaret’s School was built at Braceborough in 1871 for the benefit of village children but became redundant in the late 20th century when pupils were sent to larger schools in the county. The building stood empty until 1999 when it was refurbished and modernised for use as a community centre, now the village hall, although the original school bell and bell cote over the front porch have been retained.

Old cottages at Braceborough, near Bourne, Lincolnshire
Farm workers’ cottages are a feature of most English villages, a reminder that rural communities in past times depended on the land for their living, such as this row of six picturesque dwellings of mellowed stone at Braceborough, although many of them now occupied by very different tenants.

Village signpost at Braceborough, near Bourne, Lincolnshire
The signposts of yesteryear are fast disappearing and most have already gone from urban areas although some remain in the countryside as a reminder of a quieter and less hurried age such as this one found nestling amid the landscaped splendour in the centre of Braceborough village where it has been directing travellers for over a century.
