Red Lion Square, STAMFORD, PE9 2AH

Number 2 Red Lion Square is the end of a range of medieval buildings at right angles to the square. This was the Red Lion Inn, which closed before 1720 and which gave its name to the square. The section next to the square was rebuilt with an ashlar front under a stone slate roof in the 18th century. The rear part was rebuilt in red brick in the early 19th century and a shopfront was inserted. It is some 11 miles northwest of Peterborough and about 27 miles east of Leicester, and is set on Roman Ermine Street and the Great North Road. The picturesque town is constructed almost entirely of limestone, much of the town centre was built in the 17th and 18th centuries in Jacobean or Georgian style. Tourism is an important element of Stamford’s economy.

Retailer of outdoor and working clothing in a prime location on the corner of Red Lion Street. Ostensibly 17th and 18th century building, but parts are much older. The Red Lion Street facade. There is a datestone inscribed 1671 in the recessed section which is a 19th century rebuilding, but the jettied gable section could well be of this date. Listed Grade II as part of 6 & 7 Crown Street.
